| According to May Helen Johnson, “Getting out of the neighborhood and bringing back new ways of behaving and learning from other cultures” are just some of the benefits to children participating in Emmaus House’s Summers Away Camp Program. May Helen is the grandmother of three of the 16 children participating this coming summer, and over the 35 years of the program (formerly called the New England Camp Program), several of her own children and other grandchildren have attended. “The connection between children from different parts of the country has been remarkable, particularly during a critical time in a child’s life –their teen years–when peer pressure is so high and summertime leaves them with idle time in their own neighborhoods. I personally know the blessings of this program.” Emmaus House receives 16 scholarships from away camps for up to $6,000 per child. Sponsoring a child will help one of the campers with airfare and other camp expenses. It costs about $400 for air fare and $200 for clothing and supplies for each youngster. |
Carleton will be attending Camp Dudley
Emmaus House is thrilled to count six away camps this summer with the addition of Camp Dudley in Westport, New York. The others are: Camps Bishopswood, Wyonegonic, Winona and Agawam in Maine and Camp Quinebarge in New Hampshire. 11 boys age 9-15 years and 5 girls age 10-12 years will attend for 4-7 weeks. Demond Foster, a returning15 year old says, “It is the best experience I have ever had and I know it will make the difference in my life. There is more for me than hanging out on a street corner.” Demond and his mother, and all of the other campers and their families, can meet expenses only with assistance from wonderful people like you.
